Valentine’s Day, is it a day to share with loved ones eating chocolates and whispering sweet nothings or a miserable holiday that amplifies depression and loneliness? For me, it was always just my mom’s birthday, so in her honor today, I thought I’d share some of her wisdom.
Much of what my mom taught me she learned from the AA Program, but you don’t have to suffer from alcoholism to understand. We likely all have suffered from an “ism” that has nothing to do with alcohol. Think of any crutch you may have used to mask a fear. Fear of failure, loss, abandonment, rejection, what others think, etc. My mom said the ‘ism’ represents “I. Self. Me.” and when this is our focus we get into trouble.
It isn’t wrong to expect good things from life or decent treatment from others, but you will be let down sometimes. And then the choice is yours, will you wallow in self-pity or anger; retaliate and make a bad situation worse or trust that blessings are bound to follow if you surrender, let go, ask yourself what you might learn from the messes in which you find yourself and then take time to share your faith and blessings with others?
Happy February 14th spread some love today, not because its Valentine’s Day, but because you are a good person and you understand that your smile can help make the world a better place!
Happy February 14th
